How Does Google Spy On You?
Google collects a significant amount of data through Android
phones using various methods, primarily to enhance its services and for
advertising purposes. Here's how this data collection works:
Google Services and Apps:
Google Play Services: This core app on Android
devices handles authentication for Google services, integrated location
services, and access to Google APIs. It collects data like location, device
information, and app usage to personalize services and ads.
Google Assistant: When you use voice commands, your
audio input is sent to Google servers for processing, which can include
always-on listening for the activation phrase "Hey Google". This data
is used to improve speech recognition and personalize your experience.
Data Collection via User Activity:
Search and Browsing History: Google tracks your
searches, the websites you visit, and the ads you interact with across Google
services like Chrome and YouTube, creating a profile for ad targeting.
Location Tracking: Even with location services
disabled, Google can estimate your location through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals
or cell tower data. They use this for location-based services and ads.
Permissions and Background Activities:
App Permissions: Many Google apps request access to
features like your contacts, camera, microphone, and storage. These permissions
allow Google to gather data in the background for features like Now Playing,
which identifies music playing around you.
Background Services: Google apps might run in the
background, collecting data on your usage patterns, which can include battery
life, network connections, and storage usage.
Ad Tracking and Personalization:
Ad Topics: Google uses data collected from your app
usage and browsing habits to create "Ad Topics" which are used to
serve you more relevant advertisements.
Data Sharing and Third Parties:
Google shares collected data with third parties for
advertising purposes. This includes data like geolocation, device IDs, and
browsing history.
Security and Privacy Concerns:
Potential for Spying: While Google's primary intent
is to improve services and personalize ads, there's potential for misuse.
Security flaws could theoretically allow for more invasive spying, though
Google denies this practice.
What OS Should I Go With?
Most customers go with GrapheneOS. It is the most secure and
private option. On the other hand, CalyxOS is popular because it gives as close
to stock android between the two. GrapheneOS has a slightly higher learning
curve.
What if I decide I would rather have the other OS?
If you decide to change the OS you can send it back anytime
within 6 months of purchase to be flashed to another OS. Please check the return
section of the site for more details.
What if I decide I want to go back to a stock android device with google spying on me?
If you would like for google to start spying on you again
with the stock android, I can send you instructions on how to go back to a
stock android at any time. A computer will be needed. You could also send it
back to me within 6 months of purchase to be set back up with stock android.
